Anelka converted to Islam in 2004. This change was influenced by a discussion with some childhood friends. He took up an Islam name Abdul-Salam Bilal. His upbringing with plenty of Algerian friends in the suburbs of Paris is also reported to have influenced his decision to convert. He had a lot in common with the said Algerian friends including the love for Islam. His conversion did not change his life.
